Shibunkaku is pleased to present Komorebi, acclaimed American abstract artist Mary Weatherford’s first solo exhibition in Japan at our Ginza location.
The exhibition is curated by Jeremy Strick, veteran curator and former director of MOCA, Los Angeles, and presented in collaboration with galerie frank elbaz, for AWT Focus 2026. The presentation highlights Weatherford’s recent shellac ink works on gampi paper created in 2024, alongside new paintings incorporating seashells and a new signature neon piece. As her first exhibition in Japan, it provides a unique opportunity to engage directly with her practice shaped by more than three decades of work.
The exhibition’s title, Komorebi, resonates throughout both the works themselves and their curated presentation. The metaphorical dappled light, as Weatherford refers to it, of the works informs the exhibition’s curation, intended to evoke the sensation of walking through a forest.
