Shibunkaku is participating in TEFAF Maastricht 2022.
Our presentation centers on Japanese and international postwar avant-garde including Morita Shiryū and Inoue Yūichi of the avant-garde calligraphy movement, and works by the abstract painters Nambata Tatsuoki, Miyawaki Aiko and Shimamoto Shōzō. These are complemented with a work by the American abstract expressionist Robert Motherwell and highlights from our collection of premodern art such as a hanging scroll by Rinpa master Sakai Hōitsu and a rare work attributed to Dai Jin, a Chinese painter of the 15th century.

Aiming to reflect the multifold interrelations and artistic cross-fertilization between East and West in the 1950s and 1960s in particular, Shibunkaku highlights the substantial common grounds between Western modernism and Japanese currents aiming for internationalization while at the same time acknowledging and building on their different cultural roots.

The pervasive power of time-honored artistic conventions is a particularity in Japanese art, with Sakai Hōitsu himself being as much an art historian as he was a painter. Hōitsu’s early-19th century Rinpa revival ensued its later reception in European art circles including the impressionist and symbolist painters. The acceptance of artistic lineage continues to the present, as even radical avant-gardists such as Inoue honored their predecessors and strove to preserve their achievements. Continuity thus reveals itself as the root of innovation.

A selection of works is also on display on TEFAF Online.
