In Japanese art, light and shadow have long been more than mere visual phenomena; they form the foundation of a distinctive worldview shaped by nature, spirituality, and aesthetic sensibility. For Frieze Masters 2026, Shibunkaku presents a cross-disciplinary selection of artworks spanning Nihonga, watercolour, and oil painting, calligraphy, sculpture, and ceramics, exploring how Japanese artists, through the twentieth century and beyond, have reinterpreted the relationship between light and shadow and opened new avenues of artistic expression.
