ART FAIR TOKYO 20

  • ART FAIR TOKYO 20

At ART FAIR TOKYO, Shibunkaku is pleased to present the work of calligrapher Ishikawa Kyuyoh, an artist who has consistently questioned the very essence of the act of writing and pushed the boundaries of expression at the forefront of his time.

This exhibition brings together major works from the artist’s “Gray Era” of the 1970s, when he broke away from the emotional aesthetics that had long dominated calligraphy. It also features representative series from the 1980s onward based on classical Japanese literature—The Tale of Genji and Essays in Idleness—as well as Ishikawa’s latest pieces that transform his own words into powerful visual forms.

We invite you to experience, in person, the world of Ishikawa Kyuyoh—an artistic universe that overturns preconceived notions of calligraphy and unfolds with astonishing density and intensity.
