Shibunkaku is pleased to present a joint exhibition with neugerriemschneider for Art Collaboration Kyoto 2026. Woven through shared connections between artists, mediums, and subject matter, the presentation forms a visual network of dialogue spanning the present day and centuries past. Unexpected yet harmonious resonances emerge throughout the exhibition: modern Nihonga master Uemura Shōkō and contemporary multidisciplinary artist Pae White engage in a conversation on the ephemerality of nature, while Ishikawa Kyuyoh and Rirkrit Tiravanija employ the newspaper as a medium through which the personal and political intersect. Bringing together artists across cultures, continents, and generations, the exhibition proposes a forum for inquiry into the enduring possibilities of artistic practice.
At the same time, Billy Childish’s first solo exhibition in Japan will be presented in culmination of his stay at Saga House, Shibunkaku’s artist-in-residence program located in the heart of historic Kyoto. In mid-October, as the days grew shorter and autumn’s vibrant colors came into view at Arashiyama, Childish created his new works, exhibited alongside pieces personally selected by the artist from our collection. Childish continues his career-long dialogue with art history together with historical predecessors within the distinctive setting of Saga House.
