Shibunkaku welcomes Nonaka-Hill from Los Angeles as our guest gallery at Art Collaboration Kyoto 2022. We are pleased to present a selection of works which transcend time and space to find an audacious and almost theatrical harmony.
Mural scaled depictions of serene nature, produced three centuries apart by Rimpa master Ogata Korin and by contemporary artist Imai Ulala, set the stage for the lush, painterly nature examinations by New York based painter Ellen Altfest and by Kayama Matazo, a modern Nihon-ga master and Kojima Zenzaburo, a prominent Yō-ga artist. Pure material physicality unites the sculptural arrangement of Kadonaga Kazuo’s massive sculpture of a log made of a log, with Uematsu Eiji’s lunar appearing ceramic spheres and Yasunaga Masaomi’s vessels formed of glaze which appear to have been excavated from centuries ago.
Altogether, the works created by artists from different periods and backgrounds will evoke a quiet twilight-to-nocturnal aura that brings a rich and deep breath.
