Shibunkaku participates in Art Basel Hong Kong 2026.
This presentation offers an overview of the development of Japanese art from the early 20th century through the postwar period and into the contemporary era, brought together through works by artists who shaped each period.
In painting, we will feature works by Léonard Tsuguharu Foujita, Kumagai Morikazu, and Fukuda Heihachirō, together with Yamaguchi Takeo, a leading figure of postwar abstraction, and Shimomura Ryōnosuke, who forged a distinctive formal language of his own. Their respective explorations of nature, color-field composition, and the materiality of paint reveal the diverse trajectories that modern Japanese painting has taken over the past century.
In calligraphy, we will present works by Inoue Yūichi, Shinoda Tōkō, and Ishikawa Kyuyoh, offering a view of the expanding expressive scope of calligraphic art from the postwar era to today. Each artist has engaged with characters, brush, and ink in distinct ways, opening new horizons for the medium. From meaningful characters to liberated brushlines to explorations of the structure of language, their works reveal the multiplicity of forms that calligraphy can take.
We will also showcase works by Paula Siebra, who spent last summer in the Sagano area of Kyoto creating a new body of work. Encounters with Japan’s landscape and culture resonated with her sensibility, giving rise to expressions shaped by dialogue, discovery, and a renewed artistic vision.
We invite you to visit us at Booth 3E05 at Art Basel Hong Kong to experience the unfolding evolution of Japanese art from the modern era to the present—and the vibrant breadth it continues to achieve today.

This presentation surveys the development of Japanese art from the early 20th century to the present through works by artists who shaped each era.
In painting, we feature Foujita Tsuguharu, Kumagai Morikazu, and Fukuda Heihachirō, alongside Yamaguchi Takeo—an essential figure of postwar abstraction—and Shimomura Ryōnosuke, known for his distinctive formal language. Their approaches to nature, color, and materiality highlight the diverse evolution of modern Japanese painting.
In calligraphy, works by Inoue Yūichi, Shinoda Tōkō, and Ishikawa Kyuyoh demonstrate the expanding expressive potential of the medium from the postwar era onward.
We also present new works by Paula Siebra, created during her stay in Kyoto last summer.
We invite you to visit Booth 3E05 to experience these dynamic trajectories in Japanese art.
