Predominantly influenced by the ideas of Ernest Fenollosa and Okakura Tenshin, Taikan played an active role as the core member in the Nihon bijutsu-in (the Japan Art Institute), the largest independent artists’ group, from the Meiji period to the postwar era. Under his influence, Nihon bijutsu-in has cultivated a great many talented artists to the present day.
