Profile

Died at the young age of forty, the talented painter Hayami Gyoshū is the third generation master of modern nihonga (Japanese-style painting), succeeding predecessors such as Yokoyama Taikan and Takeuchi Seihō. Gyoshū successfully combined the Western illusionistic realism with the subjective realism and refined representation of the Chinese Song and Yuan flower-and-bird paintings in his shasei technique. He further developed nihonga by introducing the Rimpa-inspired decorative style to his paintings, reaching a new height of the modern nihonga.
